An IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photofacial is an innovative cosmetic procedure, allows patients to transform red, uneven, sun-damaged, or aging skin into a radiant, even-toned complexion. During this simple procedure, pulses of light are applied to the skin, causing collagen and blood vessels below the epidermis to contract, resulting in reduced redness, faded age spots, and diminished wrinkles. If you suffer from age spots, rosacea, sun damage, or even fine lines and wrinkles, IPL photofacial treatments can be of great benefit to you.
The IPL device emits special light waves that are adjusted and targeted at hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and age spots). The light waves pass through the skin and are absorbed by either hemoglobin or melanin resulting in a collapse of the vessel wall or fragmenting of melanin. As a result, the melanin pigment and tiny blood vessels are absorbed by the patient’s body, creating a more even-toned appearance in the skin.
An IPL photofacial produces minimal discomfort, if any at all. A topical numbing cream can be used to prevent any potential discomfort. It is often recommended that patients receive between 3 to 6 sessions of IPL treatment to achieve the desired results.
Patients with a lighter complexion are the best candidates for IPL treatment. When performed on the ideal patient, it effectively improves the texture of the skin, reducing unwanted sun damage and age spots, shrinking pore size and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, patients with rosacea, a skin condition causing blotchy redness in the face, often respond very well to IPL treatments in conjunction with the proper skin regimen.
Immediately following IPL treatment, your face may appear slightly red, but this should subside within a few hours and you should begin to see results within the first 24 hours. With each session, you will see more and more improvement until the final outcome is revealed: rejuvenated, smoother and even-toned skin.
